Oldonyo Lengai means the mountain of God in Maasai language located in the northern part of Tanzania in Arusha region lying just south of Lake Natron in the rift valley in the heart of the Maasai country –the mountain is the active volcanic mountain one of the few remaining in the world. The locals here regards this mountain as the sacred mountain and no agencies, or tour guides are allowed to take visitors to this mountain but only the local Maasai guides can do this, The mountain stands at 2878metres above the soda ash Lake Natron the world breeding nest for flamingos. Ascending this mountain normally requires an early morning start to reach to the top within 6 to 7 hours –shorts and warm jackets are suitable for ascent but long pants are good as the summit can be cold. The mountain is situated in the Ngorongoro highlands and it frequently does eruption “Minor” and forms cone like structures to its crater base. The mountain is an ideal place for walking safaris escorted by the Maasai guide at the near village with their traditional weapons where visitors can sight wild animals including olive baboons, vervet monkeys, hyenas, Jackals, zebras, impala and gazelles.
