About 2 million years ago the Ngorongoro volcano erupted, and its walls collapsed. The volcano floor sank to create a natural enclosure with its 600m tall walls. Now, at over 19 kilometers wide, Ngorongoro Crater is filled with great areas of acacia forest, hippo filled swamps and open grasslands. These different habitats contain over 30,000 animals – including elephants, warthogs, flamingoes, magnificent birdlife, the rare black rhinoceros and all the predatory cats. The Maasai can also be seen grazing their cattle alongside the buffalo and wildebeest”. The word Tarangire was derived from two tribal words “Tara” which means river and “Wire” which means warthog which all these words together mean the river of warthogs so the park itself owes its name to Tarangire river which flows across the area and attracts high number of migrant animals in the dry season when many migratory wildlife species come back to the permanent water of Tarangire river. The Park has the highest concentration of elephants in North – Tanzania and you can view these animals all year round where elephant herd populations can reach as many as 3,000. The Tarangire River has water all year round which attracts more animal and different bird species during dry seasons of the year. During the dry season (July-October), many animals from the surrounding areas come to the river to drink. If you visit the park during the dry season, you will witness an unforgettable natural wonder as you observe exotic big mammals such as lions, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeests, zebras and various types of antelopes such as gazelles. During the dry season, Tarangire is a haven for bird watchers with over 550 different species, including the Maasai Ostrich-the world’s largest bird. Later you will get transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight to the next destination or back home.
